Blackjack Overnight

blackjack02 Last night, the teen campers slept out at Blackjack Campground.  At a height of over 2100 feet, Mt. Blackjack is the second tallest peak on the island (those of you who have been to White’s will know it as the peak with the radio tower on top).  The campground is not quite at the apex, but nestled on the back side of the peak, amid a grove of beautiful pine trees.   blackjack03 The campers left White’s about 3:30 pm, hiking a total of over 5 miles to the Blackjack campground.  Along the way, they completed a photo scavenger hunt of various landmarks and silly tasks to complete.  Then, at the campground, they pitched their own tents and roasted hot dogs and s’mores over the fire. They told stories, played music, and gazed at the stars. Although they are tired today (and I can’t blame them!  They worked hard!), they seemed to really enjoy the overnight trip.  I think the overnights are one of the coolest things we do at Camp Castaway, and definitely one of the strongest memories for the campers. At the Catalina Experience, we believe that every summer in a young person’s life is an opportunity to slow down, open up and explore. We provide experiences that nourish body and spirit, and in doing so, allow them to connect with nature and discover more about who they are.
